My love for crochet started my senior year of high school in San Jose, CA when my best friend’s mom made a scarf that I was in LOVE with, I literally wore it every day! Fast forward a few years later while working as a Banker in Pullman, WA, I’d watch a coworker complete scarves for her sons. Her work mesmerized me. I had to learn and thank God, she was willing to teach! She started me off with a “gift pack” of black, mustard, and green Red Heart yarn and a G5 hook. As a Steel City Mafia Member (exclusive Pittsburg Steeler fan club) I naturally started a Steeler’s Scarf I ended up finishing as Santonio Holmes caught the game winning touchdown pass during Super Bowl XLIII February 1, 2009 (the week before my 21st birthday, the best present ever right!!!). I dubbed that scarf lucky then, I had no idea!
All of my friends were Seattle Seahawks fans at the time and would ask where I got my scarf from and ask that I make one for themselves or as birthday and Christmas presents even after moving to Orlando, Florida. After a few years of having a long list of request during the holiday season I realized I had a business and named it GameDay Crochet. Scarves and Beanies were great when I lived in Pullman, WA but I wanted people to be able to wear crochet year round and in any climate and I wanted to be able to wear crochet in humid Florida. So I started to create simple silhouettes in a various types of yarn to provide traditional fits with appropriate warmth and textures. Soon I was creating bathing suits, jackets, dresses, shoes, and handbags. After moving closer to home in Oakland, California and receiving more custom crochet clothing orders than sports apparel and the consistent influence of small startup businesses, individuality, and a new norm for formal I shut down GameDay Crochet and grew into Willis and Cro and started creating dresses and gowns for more upscale occasions. Now Willis and Cro is a full collection featuring everything from custom sports apparel to everyday fashion and a bridal collection.
Every item is still handmade to order for the fearless fashion leaders who are more interested in the quality and classic design in their clothing than the trendy uniforms worn by peers.
